Eiffel Tower meeting at Palais de Chaillot

The Palais de Chaillot stands across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower in the 16th arrondissement. It was built for the 1937 Universal Exposition and sits beside the Trocadéro Gardens and the Warsaw Fountains. In the film, CIA Director Erica Sloane (Angela Bassett) meets August Walker (Henry Cavill) here with the tower behind them. Walker floats the idea that Ethan Hunt might be the criminal mastermind John Lark. The terrace is open ground, so you can stand where the conversation was staged.
Jardin du Palais-Royal

The Jardin du Palais-Royal is a formal garden in the 1st arrondissement, ringed by arcades on three sides. Its southern courtyard holds Daniel Buren's 260 black-and-white striped columns. Ethan waits here for Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who has tailed him since his meeting with the White Widow (Vanessa Kirby) along the Seine. He confronts her, and after a high-speed chase across the city she finds him here again. They talk through their shared history. It is a public garden, and the columns make it easy to match against the film.
Ilsa follows Ethan through Paris

La Comédie-Française is a state theatre in central Paris. Founded in 1680, it is the oldest active theatre company in the world and the only French state theatre with its own permanent troupe. The street around it doubles for the walk where Ilsa tries to follow Ethan discreetly after his Seine meeting with the White Widow. He knows she is behind him. You can see the theatre front from the public pavement.
Solomon Lane extraction in Passy

Square Alboni at Passy station is a small residential link in the 16th arrondissement, beside the Passy viaduct and metro station, with Eiffel Tower views nearby. A Paris policewoman (Alix Bénézech) is caught off guard when Ethan's team opens a garage door with guns drawn. A hooded, handcuffed Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) is shoved into the back of their vehicle. The area is residential and partly gated, with private gardens close by, so keep to what is publicly open.
Jeanne d'Arc statue chase

This stretch of the 1st arrondissement sits at the eastern end of the Tuileries Garden. It is named for the Battle of the Pyramids, the Napoleonic victory in Egypt in 1798, and its focal point is the equestrian statue of Jeanne d'Arc. Ethan (Tom Cruise) passes the statue while escaping both the Paris police and Lane's henchmen, weaving through traffic and crowds. The statue sits in a public square, so you can walk up to it.
Paris police chase to Benji and Luther

A grand avenue in the 2nd arrondissement was cut during Baron Haussmann's rebuilding of Paris and runs from the Louvre toward the Palais Garnier opera house. Here Ethan races through traffic with police behind him, trying to reach Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) for an extraction. The Sentier textile district, the Galerie Vivienne covered passage and a Japanese ramen quarter are all close by, which makes it an easy stop to pair with others.
Viaduc d'Austerlitz boat escape

The Viaduc d'Austerlitz is a steel arch bridge carrying Métro Line 5 over the Seine between the 13th and 12th arrondissements. After the IMF snatches Solomon Lane from his police and Interpol transport, his henchmen gather at their vehicles for a rescue attempt. Meanwhile Luther and Benji speed down the Seine by boat with Lane aboard, waving police off. You can see the bridge from the riverside, and the Cinémathèque Française and the Coulée verte walkway are nearby.
Paris alley motorcycle escape

The Paris alley is a small lane in the Monnaie quarter of the 6th arrondissement, just south of Pont Neuf on the Left Bank. Ethan and Walker's stolen box truck wedges between the walls, so they switch to motorcycles. Ethan's bike won't start while the police close in. The Paris Mint, the Hôtel de la Monnaie, is in the same neighbourhood.
Paris boulevard median sewer scene

This boulevard median is in the 7th arrondissement, not far from the Eiffel Tower and the Hôtel des Invalides. Ethan, knocked off his motorcycle and hurt, pulls his knife and limps toward a sewer opening to reach Luther and Benji. That opening was set dressing built for the film and does not exist at the real spot. Expect an ordinary stretch of the 7th arrondissement.
London rooftop chase at Blackfriars

Blackfriars Railway Bridge crosses the Thames between the Millennium Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. Built in 1864 and rebuilt with a solar roof, its station is the only one that spans the river. In the film, Ethan sprints across it chasing the double agent August Walker (Henry Cavill) over London rooftops. Views from the bridge take in St Paul's Cathedral and the Shard. The station is a working railway hub, so move through it like any commuter.
Beneath a London bridge

The Thames Path runs 298 kilometres (185 miles) from the Cotswolds to Woolwich. In central London it passes under the river bridges, and that is where Ethan runs beneath Blackfriars Railway Bridge. He has just jumped out of a window, crossed a funeral and leapt between rooftops, and he is still behind Walker. The riverside path is public, so you can walk it.
St Paul's Cathedral funeral scene

St Paul's Cathedral is Sir Christopher Wren's domed church, completed in 1711. Chasing Walker, Ethan cuts through the cathedral and lands in the middle of a funeral service, just as Apostle assassins close in from all sides. The cathedral is an active place of worship. The interior has five visitor levels, and the Golden Gallery at the top gives the widest view of London.
London street run to Tate Modern

Tate Modern occupies the former Bankside Power Station on the Thames' south bank. After exposing Walker as a rogue agent, Ethan sprints through crowded streets toward the gallery to stop him boarding a helicopter and escaping from the rooftop. Entry to the main collection is free, though some exhibitions need tickets.
Tunnels below London

The Georgian warehouse at London Dock was built between 1804 and 1806 and designed by Daniel Alexander. It once held ivory, spices, coffee, cocoa and wine, and its cellars were built to protect high-value cargo. The film uses it as the dimly lit tunnels where Ethan is pinned under gunfire while trying to reach IMF Director Hunley (Alec Baldwin), who has been shot by a CIA team led by Sloane. View it from outside.
Kashmir cliff at Pulpit Rock

Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) rises 604 metres (1,982 feet) above the Lysefjorden near Stavanger in Rogaland, Norway. Its flat top measures about 25 by 25 metres (82 by 82 feet). It stands in for a Kashmir cliff in the final fight: Ethan pushes Walker off the edge, then climbs back up after inserting the detonator key that stops two plutonium cores from exploding. Reaching the top means a steep hike.
Kashmir helicopter chase at Sutherland Falls

Sutherland Falls and Lake Quill lie in Fiordland National Park, Southland, New Zealand. The falls drop 580 metres (1,904 feet) in three tiers. Ethan throws the pilot out, takes the controls and chases Walker for the detonator key. Tom Cruise flew the helicopter stunts himself after training as a certified helicopter pilot for the sequence. Hikers reach the falls on the Milford Track, and helicopter tours also get to Lake Quill.
Kashmir medical camp

The Rees Valley sits near Glenorchy in Otago, with snow-capped mountains and glacier-fed rivers. The Rees-Dart Track in neighbouring Mount Aspiring National Park starts nearby. The valley plays the Kashmir smallpox camp where the IMF team hunts the stolen plutonium. Ethan finds his ex-wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan) working as a volunteer doctor, then meets her new husband Eric (Wes Bentley). Glenorchy is the practical base for trekking and scenic flights.
Dream wedding

Milford Sound is a fiord on the southwest of New Zealand's South Island, with Mitre Peak and the Stirling and Bowen Falls dropping down its walls. In the film, Ethan stands at what looks like a dream wedding with Julia, until Solomon Lane appears to preside and the scene turns into a nightmare of his fears. The setting also brings fur seals, penguins and dolphins to the water.
How to plan the visit
- Paris: most stops are in the central arrondissements (1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th), with Passy and Chaillot in the 16th and the Viaduc d'Austerlitz across the 12th and 13th. A day on foot and by Métro covers most of them.
- London: Blackfriars, the Thames Path, St Paul's and Tate Modern cluster along the river, so they combine easily. The London Dock warehouse is further east.
- New Zealand: Milford Sound and Sutherland Falls are in Fiordland, while the Rees Valley is near Glenorchy in Otago. Treat them as separate trips.
- Norway: Pulpit Rock needs a steep hike above the Lysefjorden, so allow time for it.
- Several stops are residential or working sites (Passy, the London Dock warehouse, Blackfriars station). Stay on public ground, keep noise down and respect residents.
- Exact map pins for every stop are in the Go On Set app.
