MetaCortex
MetaCortex is the fictional software company where Neo works as Thomas Anderson. The exterior is a modern high-rise in Sydney’s CBD — sleek corporate glass that sells his monotonous office life before he learns the truth. This is where Neo is introduced as an employee who has no idea what’s under the surface.
The surrounding area is dense with commercial towers and weekday foot traffic. The building is still an active workplace, so stick to exterior viewing from public space.
MetaCortex Building Entrance
The MetaCortex entrance is a CBD office doorway used when Neo is escorted out after his clash with the Agents. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss appear as he’s led through that sterile, institutional frontage.
It’s part of a working commercial complex. Recognize it from the street; don’t treat it as a set tour.
The “Get in” underpass
The “Get in” underpass in Haymarket is where Trinity and the crew pull Neo into the car after his escape from MetaCortex. Reeves, Moss, and Belinda McClory shoot a tense handoff in a hard, utilitarian underpass.
The film implies a longer drive than the geography needs. It’s a public roadway — keep clear of traffic and don’t linger in the road.
Woman in red training program
The woman in red training program plays on an open CBD plaza used as a busy street inside the Matrix. Neo walks with Morpheus, gets distracted by a woman in red, and turns to face Agent Smith — the lesson that the simulation hijacks attention. Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving filmed the beat here.
The plaza still hosts everyday crowds and events. Easy to visit; harder to empty for a posed photo.
Trinity’s phone booth
Trinity’s phone booth opens the film: Agents close in, she answers, and a truck destroys the booth as she vanishes. Moss and Weaving filmed in Sydney’s financial district among towers and foot traffic.
The booth is gone; the streetscape still reads if you know the scene. Stay on public footpaths. It’s one of the clearest statements of the film’s exit-through-a-phone-line rule.
Heart O’ The City Hotel
Heart O’ The City Hotel is the fictional rundown hotel where the movie opens — Agent Smith and police arriving for Trinity. Weaving’s beat was shot in Surry Hills, just south of the CBD, using mixed residential and commercial buildings for grit.
The “hotel” was set dressing more than a lobby you can check into. Keep visits short and quiet for residents.
Cypher’s phone booth
Cypher’s phone booth is where the traitor calls Tank for an exit. Joe Pantoliano and Moss filmed in Surry Hills; the same pocket of streets also appears when the crew emerges from below earlier in the film — a reuse that shows how tight the Sydney shoot was.
Narrower lanes feel more claustrophobic than the CBD. Public pavement only; the booth is gone.
Streets within the Matrix
Streets within the Matrix back Neo’s sprint after he briefly floors Agent Smith. Reeves runs Surry Hills lanes with a mixed, gritty texture the Wachowskis used as “inside the simulation.”

Neo’s final phone call
Neo’s final phone call lands in the CBD. Having accepted he is “The One,” he tells the machines he intends to free minds still trapped. Reeves filmed among towers and heavy foot traffic.

Skyscraper where Morpheus is held captive
The skyscraper where Morpheus is held captive is a CBD high-rise standing in for the government building Agents use. It’s the target of Neo and Trinity’s helicopter rescue — one of the film’s heaviest action stretches.

Exit point / Déjà vu staircase
The Exit point is a grand hotel staircase used for the déjà vu beat — the black cat twice, the glitch that warns the crew they’re about to be ambushed. Reeves, Fishburne, Moss, Pantoliano, McClory, and Julian Arahanga filmed on elaborate stairs and lobby volume.
The property is private lodging. Don’t expect walk-in access to the staircase.
